While ►past reportage from the Beroun railway station mainly talked about the state of things and the atmosphere of the place, these photographs are, besides the documentary, also a study of the compositional possibilities offered by the (relatively) modern railway station. And not exactly a few.
The night electrified railway station is, in terms of composition, actually a spot-lit network of lines. Both horizontal, which are rails, overhead lines, platform edges, warning strips, etc., and vertical ones, mainly columns of all kinds. The entire space varies greatly depending on the lens focal length selected. For shorter focal distances, foreground is highlighted and background is suppressed, telephoto lenses unify the entire network, giving the impression of a close fusion of individual elements. All these lines are intertwined by illuminated trains, that emphasize certain directions and bring movement and other energy into the images.
But in addition to all these technical aspects, the station has always been, is and will be primarily a meeting place and goodbye, reunion and breakup, hope and disappointment, flight and return. The place of daily trips to work and the beginning or end of trips and expeditions. Night illumination further enhances the atmosphere of a floating, glowing island, that seems to be a small, bounded world for itself. –
